Bogo to Become Visayas’ First ‘Smart City’

The City of Bogo has started laying the infrastructure foundation for a 50-kilometer fiber optic network, effectively making it the first “Smart City” in the Visayas region.

Bogo IT-Department head and president of Bogo ICT Council Roger Tonacao said that phase I of the ICT connectivity project has commenced. The network will connect all schools, government facilities, barangays, and private service utilities in the city.

Tonacao said the project is “purely LGU (local government unit) initiative.” With phase I covering a 10-km line, they aim to complete the connectivity network within the year.

Getting brilliant minds together

Bogo will also host the first Visayas ICT Conference (VICTOR) on Feb. 21 and BPO Jobs Fair on Feb. 22.

VICTOR aims to gather all ICT councils in the Visayas region as well as other stakeholders including LGUs and ICT-BPO industry players to discuss current issues, programs, developments, and trends related to ICT.

At least 200 delegates are expected to attend the forum, according to Tonacao. Moreover, the conference will take up topics such as “Building a Smarter City” with a resource speaker from Singapore.

Wilfredo Saa Jr., managing director of Cebu IT-BPM.Org (CIB.O), said the ICT infrastructure is designed to encourage BPO firms in setting up business in Bogo.
