BDO Alagang Kabayan Supports 500,000 Filipino Seafarers with New Wellness Hub

More than 500,000 Filipino seafarers keep the global maritime industry moving. Now, a new Seafarers’ Wellness Center aims to support these maritime heroes and their families onshore, with backing from BDO through its Alagang Kabayan program.

A One-Stop Hub for Seafarers’ Welfare

The center, led by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in partnership with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), offers a central space for legal, medical, and welfare services. BDO Unibank, through its “Alagang Kabayan” program, joins the initiative to extend financial and holistic support to overseas Filipino workers.

Filipino seafarers can access free legal advice via the Public Attorney’s Office and volunteer lawyers, visit the Alagang OWWA Yakap Clinic and Gamot Botika para sa mga Marino, relax in recreation areas, and attend Pre-Departure Orientation Seminars (PDOS) in dedicated training rooms.

Financial Empowerment Through BDO

While the center focuses on physical and legal support, financial preparedness remains crucial. Through its BDO Alagang Kabayan program, the bank delivers nationwide financial literacy workshops and PDOS sessions. Seafarers learn how to budget, manage remittances, avoid scams, and plan for reintegration, all essential tools for long-term stability.

“We want OFWs to be financially empowered and in control of their future,” said OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne “PY” Caunan, highlighting the power of public-private partnerships in providing meaningful services.

Real Stories: How BDO Makes Life at Sea Easier

For Christian Jay Padrigon, digital banking through BDO Kabayan Savings and BDO Pay allows him to track transactions and remittances in real time, even while onboard.

Meanwhile, veteran seafarer Ronnel Hurgo credits BDO Alagang Kabayan for helping him save consistently and provide for his family. “Malaking tulong ang BDO sa pag-iipon at pagpapadala ng pera. Importante na may naipupundar tayo para sa pamilya at sa sarili,” he shared.

Government Support Strengthens the Mission

DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac acknowledged the sacrifices of Filipino seafarers, while Congresswoman Johanne Bautista pointed out that the 2026 budget increases for OWWA and DMW reflect the government’s commitment to migrant welfare. She noted the Wellness Center as a tangible example of how public resources directly reach those who need them most.

BDO Alagang Kabayan as a Long-Term Partner

By combining financial literacy programs with holistic welfare services, BDO strengthens its role as a reliable partner to Filipino seafarers from pre-departure to reintegration, ensuring these maritime heroes can navigate life at sea and on land with confidence.
