Why Some Nepo Babies Earn Respect (and Others Don’t)
“Nepo babies” are under fire…for ties to ghost flood control projects. Social media has been ablaze, going after the children of powerful contractors and politicians for flaunting luxury cars, designer outfits, and private jet trips, as taxpayers question where the money really came from. But here’s the thing: not all nepo babies are created equal. Let’s discuss!
Wealth Without Clear Roots
Unlike celebrities or politicians who made their mark through visible careers, these contractor kids, from Claudine Co to Jammy Cruz, live lavish lifestyles far beyond what their families’ official businesses can explain. With their social media feeds as “resibo,” they’ve been showcasing wealth that looks suspiciously like the direct fruits of corruption.
So when the backlash hit, they scrambled to deactivate their accounts or go private. But the damage was done; Filipinos had already seen the displays of extravagance and begun asking, “Saan nga ba galing ang pera mo?”
Merit Over Nepotism
Others, though nepo babies, prove their reputations aren’t solely based on their surnames.
Despite being the son of Vic Sotto and Coney Reyes and the nephew of Tito Sotto, Vico Sotto earned the people’s respect through his good governance as the mayor of Pasig City.
Heart Evangelista achieved recognition through acting in ABS-CBN and GMA, numerous brand endorsements, and becoming an international fashion icon before marrying into politics.
Similarly, Sharon Cuneta, daughter of former Pasay City Mayor Pablo Cuneta, built her “Megastar” career as a singer and actress before marrying Senator Kiko Pangilinan.
Lastly, Kris Aquino, daughter of President Corazon Aquino and Senator Ninoy Aquino and an heiress to the Cojuanco family, earned her “Queen of All Media” title through her extensive work in film, television, and talk show hosting.
For these four, privilege doesn’t have to mean entitlement; success can still be earned.
Stealth Wealth
Globally, the ultra-rich are turning to “stealth wealth,” which includes quiet luxury, understated dressing, and living below the radar. However, our current local nepo babies broadcast their every designer label and helicopter ride.
So for ordinary Filipinos, who work daily only to face floods worsened by ghost projects, this loud luxury is more than just tone-deaf…it’s offensive.

Why It Matters
This outrage isn’t about envy; it’s about accountability. Because nepotism—and especially unchecked dynasties—breeds mediocrity, corruption, and inequality.
So the anger now rising online reflects a deeper demand: meritocracy, transparency, and leaders who serve, not steal.
At the end of the day, not all nepo babies are the same. Some prove their worth; others flaunt what looks like stolen wealth. But beyond calling them out, Filipinos must also hold accountable the systems that allow dynasties and shady deals to thrive. Because when corruption funds luxury for a few, it’s the many who pay the price.
