84% of Filipinos find democracy in the country satisfactory – SWS

According to a September 2018 poll released last Thursday by the Social Weather Stations (SWS), 84% of Filipinos find democracy in the country to be satisfactory. This is an increase of six points from the 78% recorded last March.

In addition, 59% of Filipinos that are “committed democrats”. Accordingly, “democracy is always preferable to any other kind of government.”

On another note, “conditional authoritarians” which are 20% of Filipinos said that “under some circumstances, an authoritarian government can be preferable to a democratic one.”

However, 19% of Filipinos are “indifferent”, saying that “it does not matter whether we have a democratic or a non-democratic regime.”

Satisfaction was highest among “committed democrats” at 88% with lower satisfaction results from “conditional authoritarians” (80%) and those that are “indifferent” (74%).

 

Perspective of democracy throughout the years

SWS said that throughout the years, satisfaction with democracy had the following peaks – 70% in September 1992, 68% in June 2010, and the record-high 86% in September 2016.

After the May 2013 elections, an 80% satisfaction rating was recorded (June 2013).

The survey for the Third Quarter 2018 Social Weather Report was conducted from September 15-23, and had a total of 1,500 adults (18 years old and above) nationwide as respondents.
