100,000 Filipino English teachers needed in China

Filipino English teachers will gain more overseas opportunities in the coming months, as China is ready to accept at least 100,000 English language instructors from the Philippines.

The good news was announced by President Rodrigo Duterte before his departure for China on April 9. A related agreement between the two countries is expected to be signed on the sidelines of an international economic forum, which the president will be attending.

“We are going to have a platform for this actually, especially the labor department, tumatanggap na sila ngayon ng trabahante (they are now receiving workers). They are accepting first teachers but 100,000,” President Duterte said in his pre-departure remarks at the Davao International Airport.

The president flew to Hainan to attend the Boao Forum for Asia, a global economic forum where leaders in the Asia – Pacific can orchestrate talks with each other.

According to President Duterte, the Chinese have eased or lifted some trade restrictions — specifically on fruit exports — due to the warming of ties with the Philippines.

“There used to be a Chinese rule that excluded the Philippines as a legal source or as a source that they encouraged. They wanted to emphasize what they called native speakers but they have relaxed it now,” Philippine Ambassador to China Chito Sta. Romana said.

The envoy also said the two countries are expected to sign a bilateral agreement allowing more Filipino English teachers to be sent to Beijing.

“There are some minor details still being ironed out, but if everything works, the agreement (is) to hire more Filipino English teachers for China,” Sta. Romana said.

Sta. Romana also said the government would ensure that the Filipinos hired in China would be covered by social security.
