Why is Zero-Waste Month in January?
In 2014, former President Benigno Aquino III signed Presidential Proclamation No. 760, which designates January as Zero-Waste Month. Through this observance, Filipinos are encouraged to adopt sustainable practices and minimize waste, setting a positive tone for the rest of the year. Let us explore why else we observe this so early on.
Why January?
From Christmas to New Year, the holiday season is often filled with parties, gift-giving, and celebrations. However, this leads to excessive consumption and waste afterwards. Having Zero-Waste Month in January is an opportunity for us to reflect on these habits and start anew with more mindful choices.
Similarly, as a month associated with fresh starts, January is an ideal time to commit to reducing waste and living sustainably. It aligns with the mindset of embracing positive changes for a better future. Let us just hope that we stick to our resolutions this year!
Lastly, Zero-Waste Month supports Republic Act (RA) 9003, commonly known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. This law emphasizes proper waste management practices, and the observance helps promote its implementation nationwide.
How Could We Practice a Zero-Waste Lifestyle?
- Refuse and Reduce
To start, we can reduce consumption by buying only what we need from groceries or other shops. It also helps to avoid purchasing unnecessary items like single-use plastics. - Reuse and Repurpose
Here is a way for us to flex our creativity. Instead of throwing old items away, let us repurpose them instead: DIY projects, upcycling—the list is endless! We can also practice bringing reusable bags, bottles, and containers whenever we go out. - Recycle Properly
The simplest way for us to practice a zero-waste lifestyle is to recycle! Start by separating your garbage at home into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. And when you are out in public, look out for bins that show you which waste goes where.
