Makati City Subway officially breaks ground

The Makati City Subway, which will bring much needed relief to tens of thousands of commuters, is now slowly becoming a reality, as city officials broke ground last Wednesday.

Makati Mayor Abigail Binay, joined by former Vice President Jejomar Binay, led the groundbreaking at the Makati City Hall. The ceremony included the unveiling of a scale model of the Subway Line at the ground floor of Makati City Hall I.

By the numbers

The $3.7-billion Makati City Subway spans 10 kilometers, and has 10 stops in key points around Makati. There will also be a station near the planned Metro Manila subway, to provide easy transfers for commuters.

In a statement, the Makati City Government said that the line’s initial 12 coaches will serve up to 27,000 passengers per hour, per direction, stretching to as many as 40,000 during peak hours.

A consortium led by publicly-listed IRC Properties, together with Chinese companies, will be building the subway, and the Makati City Government expects the project to be fully functional by 2023.
