Iloilo-based Teacher Selected in Top 10 of Global Teacher Prize

Microsoft founder and well-known philanthropist, Bill Gates, has announced in a statement on Thursday that Iloilo-based teacher, Jesus Insilada, has made it to the top 10 of the Global Teacher Prize.

The Global Teacher Prize is an annual award given to an exceptional teacher who made an outstanding contribution to the profession. The prize also aims to recognize the impact of educators throughout the world.

Insilada’s claim to fame is his culture-based approach in teaching subjects like English and Creative Writing at the Caninguan National High School in Lambunao, Iloilo. As a member of the indigenous people’s Panay Bukidnon community and the first professional in a family of farmers, he has incorporated his heritage in his teaching method engaging students to learn through traditional dances, songs, epics, local games, and crafts. This approach helped Insilada’s students achieve their age-expected grades of 87%, which is assessed through tests.

Varkey Foundation and Global Teacher Prize founder, Sunny Varkey, congratulated Insilada for being selected in the Top 10. He hopes Insilada’s story will shine a spotlight on the work of teachers around the world and inspire those who are looking to enter the teaching profession.

The winner of the Global Teacher Prize will be given a US $1 million cash award and will be announced during the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai on March 18, 2018.

What started from a pool of 30,000 nominees from 173 countries was eventually cut down to a 50-teacher shortlist, and finally to the 10 finalists.

Jesus Insilada is joined by Nurten Akkuş from Turkey, Marjorie Brown from South Africa, Luis Miguel Bermudez Gutierrez from Colombia, Glenn Lee from the United States, Diego Mahfouz Faria Lima from Brazil, Koen Timmers from Belgium, Eddie Woo from Australia, Andria Zafirakou from the United Kingdom, and Barbara Anna Zielonka from Norway.
