Art for Healing: PH Arts Community Against COVID-19

While theaters, museums, and local art centers remain closed, our art industry remains thriving in its newly found home – online. On the internet, the PH art sector continues to spread hope amidst the pandemic through their craft.

Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on all of us. However, members of the art industry only strengthened their burning passion for their crafts, all the while helping their fellow Filipinos.

Music, Films, Art for Hope

In these stressful times, we need every ounce of hope we can get. And one of the things we Pinoys rely on is entertainment.

Most of us have been sharing our own “quarantine” projects on Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok. From dance challenges to trying out new recipes, and even sending information and positivity across social media.

We’ve been “healing as one,” and that’s included the local art scene. Artists from all walks of life have also used their platforms to extend help to those most in need.

Fund-raising concerts have taken the form of Facebook live sessions, as Bayanihan Musikahan has done so. This was an initiative led by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab to raise funds to support health workers and frontliners.

The local film industry, led by various filmmakers created, the Lockdown Cinema Club to help freelance film workers affected by quarantine measures due to the pandemic.

Indie films are announced on their Facebook page, along with the payment options and updates on where the donations are headed.

We might not be walking out of a theater after finishing a movie anytime soon, but these flicks are entertainment for a good cause.

For theater fans, CCP’s Tanghalang Pilipino has made its theater productions available online. Their Pantawid ng Tanghalan project, seeks help for TP’s commitment to providing relevant productions during this pandemic.

Digital artists and illustrators have come together to create the #ArtforMedPH, a social media movement that mainly uses Twitter and Instagram. Various artists have opened up for commissions to raise funds for our medical frontliners.

Digital Art Initiative, on the other hand, collaborates with various local artists for different communities globally.

The Help We Never Knew We Needed

The truth is, everyone is trying to get through this pandemic. Contrary to the dangerous popular belief that the arts aren’t essential in life, it sure is one of the many things helping us all out. When we need it most, art continues to deliver. Providing entertainment, reliving a passion, and giving hope. To all members of the PH art industry, their friends and families, and beyond – we thank you.

It’s one thing to provide a means for us to recharge and unwind, but it hits different when art builds bridges to help those in need. For the people blessed enough to support, we thank you as well. Continue to support your local artists for their work, and aid the service they’ve been doing for the country. God bless us all.
