April Fools Day Etiquette: How to Pull Pranks Responsibly
Every April 1st, it’s all fun and games…until someone gets hurt, stressed, or straight-up inconvenienced. Considering the chaotic state of the Philippines right now, April Fools Day etiquette matters more than ever. The goal? Keep it light, kind, and actually funny for everyone.
1. Don’t prank vulnerable communities.
With the continuous spike in oil prices, do not, we repeat, do NOT, pull pranks on delivery riders, service workers, or small business owners. Not only are you perpetuating “scammy” behavior, you are costing them precious time, money, and trust.
This also applies to members of marginalized groups. They deserve to go on about their day without [constantly] being the butt of your jokes.
2. Never weaponize insecurities.
Beyond April Fools Day etiquette, it’s never okay to pick on someone’s looks, weight, relationships, or financial status. You can be funny without bringing someone down.
3. If it causes panic, it’s not a prank.
Don’t pull fake emergencies, breakups, or other bad news. These are stress triggers, and it’s best to leave them out of your plans.
4. Read the room.
April Fools Day etiquette calls for learning your targets. Not everyone enjoys pranks, so what might work for your close friends might not land with colleagues or acquaintances.

5. Don’t waste people’s time.
A simpler version of Rule 1: avoid jokes that make people wait, travel, or go out of their way for nothing. Time is gold, and it’s never funny when they miss something because of your prank.
6. Know when to stop.
You’ve pulled your prank successfully; great! But don’t drag it out too long, as it can sour the mood right away.
7. If it flops, own it.
April Fools Day is also a test for accountability. If you offended someone, apologize. Don’t blame it on being April 1st and clean up any mess you made.
At the end of the day, April Fools Day etiquette asks you to pull pranks people will remember for the right reasons. Let’s keep things playful, not painful.
