Why the Philippines Needs More Convention Centers Outside Metro Manila

For decades, Metro Manila has hosted the country’s biggest conferences, expos, and global events. From international summits to trade shows, the capital has been the default location. But this comes at a cost: traffic congestion, high prices, and limited opportunities for other regions. As the Philippines pushes for more balanced growth, one question arises: why are convention centers outside Metro Manila still so limited?

The recent opening of Mactan Expo, Megaworld Corp.’s first stand-alone convention center, offers a timely answer and a possible blueprint.

Breaking Manila’s Monopoly on Big Events

Metro Manila’s venues are world-class, but they are stretched thin. Packed schedules, logistical issues, and high hotel rates make hosting large events challenging. When all events are concentrated in one city, other regions miss out on opportunities.

Investing in convention centers outside Metro Manila helps ease this pressure. Facilities like Mactan Expo allow organizers to host large gatherings in locations that are accessible, efficient, and cost-effective, without sacrificing quality.

Why Cebu Makes Sense

Cebu has long been more than a leisure destination. With its international airport, strong hotel inventory, and growing business community, it is well-positioned to host meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions.

Located within Megaworld’s 30-hectare Mactan Newtown in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan Expo benefits from an integrated township. Hotels, offices, retail, and lifestyle spaces are all nearby. Delegates can move easily between work, accommodations, and leisure.

Megaworld’s Multi-Year MICE Expansion

Mactan Expo is just the beginning. Megaworld is launching a multi-year expansion of its MICE business, planning more convention and exhibition facilities in key tourism hubs over the next five to ten years.

Following the completion of the ₱1.5-billion Mactan Expo, the Andrew Tan-led developer said it is looking at other high-growth areas to attract international events. This marks a shift for Megaworld, which has mainly focused on residential, office, and hotel projects.

To lead the initiative, Megaworld appointed Louella Caridad, former chief operating officer of World Trade Center Metro Manila. She will manage the development and operations of its exhibition facilities. Working with Megaworld Hotels & Resorts, the company will offer integrated event packages that combine venue space with its more than 6,500 hotel rooms nationwide.

Spreading Economic Opportunities Beyond the Capital

Large conventions do more than bring visitors. They create jobs, fill hotel rooms, support transport services, and boost local businesses like restaurants and tour operators. When events happen outside Metro Manila, the economic benefits reach more communities.

Investing in convention centers outside Metro Manila also strengthens tourism. Business travelers now look for destinations that combine work and leisure, something cities like Cebu can easily provide.

The Bigger Picture

Mactan Expo shows what’s possible when infrastructure investment meets regional potential. As the Philippines aims to be a top destination for global events, building more convention centers outside Metro Manila is no longer optional. It is essential for inclusive, sustainable growth.
